Walls in Staten Island homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

Staten Island is the most house-oriented borough, with one-family dwellings dominating sales in neighborhoods such as Tottenville and Todt Hill, Victorian homes and newer waterfront development in St. George, and condos and co-ops for lower-maintenance living. Across the borough, the median home was built in 1973 and 59.6% of homes are single-family.

Common wall types

Wood-frame walls with drywall

Where: One-, two- and three-family houses in Tottenville, Stapleton, Todt Hill, New Dorp and Great Kills.

Mounting: Studs are typically 16 inches on center. Lag into framing; in older houses confirm stud locations since spacing can vary.

Older plaster over lath

Where: Victorian-era houses in St. George, Stapleton and Port Richmond.

Mounting: Plaster over lath makes stud finders unreliable. Verify with a pilot hole, pre-drill slowly and use toggle bolts where a stud is out of reach.

Finished basement walls

Where: Basement rec rooms in ranch and colonial houses, including the large ranches and colonials of Todt Hill.

Mounting: Check for moisture first. Furring or framed walls may allow lags into studs; bare block or poured concrete needs masonry anchors.

Concrete, block and metal-stud condo walls

Where: Waterfront condos and townhome complexes in St. George and along the North Shore.

Mounting: Use concrete anchors in slab and block walls, snap toggles in metal-stud partitions, and follow the association's contractor rules.

Tips before you mount

  • Most Staten Island work is in detached or semi-attached wood-frame houses, so the default is lag bolts into studs. Lag into at least two studs (usually 16" on center) with 5/16" lag bolts about 2.5" to 3" long; a full-motion arm should never hang on drywall anchors alone.
  • Victorian houses in St. George and Stapleton often have plaster on lath, sometimes covered by later drywall; confirm what is behind the surface with a small test hole before choosing anchors.
  • Finished basements: look for efflorescence, damp paint or a musty smell before mounting. Mount on framed furring walls rather than directly into damp block, and use corrosion-resistant fasteners.
  • Over a fireplace in a colonial or ranch house, check the TV maker's heat limit and measure the surround temperature while the fireplace is in use.
  • Condo and townhome associations on the North Shore commonly require approval and a COI for contractors; ask for the rules before scheduling work.
  • Low-lying shoreline areas such as parts of the South Shore are exposed to humidity and storm moisture; use a weather-rated TV and sealed in-wall boxes for any porch or patio installation.
  • Concealed wiring: NEC 400.12 bars hiding a regular TV power cord inside a wall, so behind-the-TV outlets need an in-wall rated power kit, and HDMI and speaker lines inside the wall should be CL2 or CL3 rated.
