Walls in Bronx homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall
What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall
The Bronx mixes the Art Deco and prewar elevator apartment buildings along the Grand Concourse and in Riverdale with blocks of one- and two-family houses in areas such as Pelham Bay. Across the borough, the median home was built in 1957 and 11.1% of homes are single-family.

Common wall types
Plaster over masonry in prewar apartment buildings
Where: Grand Concourse, Riverdale and Pelham Bay buildings.
Mounting: Plaster is brittle and often sits on masonry or lath. Find a stud or masonry backing first, pre-drill slowly, and use masonry anchors where plaster is applied directly to brick or block.
Solid brick and concrete
Where: Brick rowhouses and attached homes, and the structural walls and columns of mid-century towers.
Mounting: Use a hammer drill with concrete screws or sleeve anchors. Buildings often forbid drilling into structural slabs or columns, so confirm what is allowed.
Wood-frame walls with drywall or plaster
Where: One- and two-family houses in Pelham Bay, Throgs Neck, City Island, Woodlawn and Riverdale.
Mounting: Studs are typically 16 inches on center but can be irregular in older houses; confirm with a stud finder and lag into framing.
Metal-stud partitions
Where: Renovated apartments and newer mid-rise condos and affordable-housing buildings across the borough.
Mounting: Use snap toggles rated for the load, or ask for wood blocking behind the drywall during renovation.
Tips before you mount
- Grand Concourse and Riverdale prewar co-ops: expect plaster over brick or tile and radiators under windows; locate the stud or masonry first and avoid drilling near old plaster edges and corners where it is most likely to crack.
- In co-ops and condos, get the alteration or house rules first; many managing agents want a contractor certificate of insurance (COI) naming the building and agent as additional insured, and limit work to set hours.
- In brick, block or concrete, use a hammer drill with a carbide bit and 1/4" concrete screws or 3/8" sleeve or wedge anchors, placed in the brick or block face rather than the mortar joints where possible. A full-motion arm on masonry should use at least four anchors.
- Art Deco and prewar buildings often have thick masonry walls and few places to route cable, so a paintable surface raceway often replaces in-wall runs.
- Pelham Bay, Throgs Neck and City Island houses are mostly wood frame: Lag into at least two studs (usually 16" on center) with 5/16" lag bolts about 2.5" to 3" long; a full-motion arm should never hang on drywall anchors alone.
- Houses near Long Island Sound, such as City Island and Throgs Neck, see salt air and humidity; an outdoor or covered-porch TV needs a weather-rated model and corrosion-resistant fasteners.
- Concealed wiring: NEC 400.12 bars hiding a regular TV power cord inside a wall, so behind-the-TV outlets need an in-wall rated power kit, and HDMI and speaker lines inside the wall should be CL2 or CL3 rated.
