Walls in Yonkers homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

Yonkers mixes Park Hill's Victorian, Tudor Revival, Arts and Crafts and Georgian Colonial houses, planned in 1888, with prewar apartment buildings, suburban Colonial Heights and a downtown Getty Square and Hudson waterfront of residential towers. Common wall types

Plaster over lath or masonry

Where: Park Hill houses and prewar apartment buildings.

Mounting: Locate studs or masonry backing, pre-drill slowly, and use toggles off-stud.

Wood-frame walls with drywall

Where: Colonial Heights and other suburban neighborhoods.

Mounting: Lag into studs at 16 inches on center.

Concrete and metal-stud condo towers

Where: Waterfront and Getty Square residential towers.

Mounting: Concrete anchors in slab; snap toggles in metal studs; building rules and COI apply.

Brick and stone

Where: Older commercial and apartment buildings and hillside foundations.

Mounting: Hammer drill with concrete screws or sleeve anchors.

Tips before you mount

  • Park Hill houses are mostly Victorian and early-20th-century with plaster walls: find studs first, use 5/16" lags, and toggles only off-stud for light loads.
  • Waterfront and Getty Square towers: ask for alteration rules and a COI requirement before scheduling.
  • Concrete: use 1/4" concrete screws or 3/8" sleeve anchors with a hammer drill; do not drill into structural slabs or columns without approval.
  • Yonkers' hilly terrain means many houses have walk-out or partially below-grade basement walls of block or stone; check moisture and mount to framed furring.
  • In metal-stud or plaster partitions with no stud to hit, snap toggles or toggle bolts rated well above the TV and mount weight are the usual choice.
  • Concealed wiring: NEC 400.12 does not allow a standard power cord inside the wall; use an in-wall rated power kit and CL2 or CL3 low-voltage cable, and expect plaster and masonry walls to make in-wall runs impractical.
