Tips before you mount
- Lag the mount into at least two studs, usually 16" on center, with 5/16" lag bolts; an articulating arm leverages far more weight on the wall than a fixed mount.
- Manhattan co-ops and condos: most boards require an alteration agreement defining scope, insurance, hours and approvals; confirm whether a wall-mounted TV counts as an alteration.
- Insurance: boards commonly ask for a certificate of insurance naming the co-op or condo, the managing agent and the owner; liability limits of $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate are a common minimum.
- Prewar plaster over masonry: use a hammer drill for the masonry and snap toggles in plaster over lath; pre-drill slowly to avoid cracking.
- Postwar and newer towers: metal-stud partitions need snap toggles or added blocking rated well above the combined TV and arm weight.
- Hiding wires: NEC 400.12 does not permit a standard TV power cord inside a wall cavity, so in-wall power needs a code-rated recessed outlet kit, while HDMI and speaker runs use CL2 or CL3 rated cable.
