Tips before you mount

  • Lag the mount into at least two studs, usually 16" on center, with 5/16" lag bolts; an articulating arm leverages far more weight on the wall than a fixed mount.
  • Co-ops and many condos: an alteration agreement is the contract that sets scope, insurance and working rules; read it before scheduling any drilling, even for a TV mount.
  • Contractors are usually asked for a certificate of insurance naming the owner, managing agent and the corporation as additional insured; ask the board or manager what limits they require.
  • Brownstone and brick rowhouse walls: use a hammer drill with 1/4" concrete screws or 3/8" sleeve anchors in solid brick; avoid soft or crumbling mortar joints.
  • Plaster over lath: find studs first, pre-drill slowly, and use snap toggles rated well above the TV and mount weight where no stud is available.
  • Hiding wires: NEC 400.12 does not permit a standard TV power cord inside a wall cavity, so in-wall power needs a code-rated recessed outlet kit, while HDMI and speaker runs use CL2 or CL3 rated cable.
