Walls in Frisco homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

Frisco is one of the fastest-growing cities in North Texas, so most homes are recent: median year built is 2010 and 82.4% were built in 2000 or later. Master-planned communities such as Phillips Creek Ranch and custom areas like Starwood define the housing.

Common wall types

Newer wood-frame brick and stone-veneer houses

Where: Phillips Creek Ranch (first homes built 2013), Frisco Lakes and Richwoods.

Mounting: Modern framing at typically 16 inches on center; mount to studs and ask the builder about blocking.

Custom homes on larger wooded lots

Where: Starwood, near the Dallas North Tollway and Lebanon Road.

Mounting: Wood frame with stone or brick; may include built-in theater rooms that need reinforced walls.

Townhomes and garden apartments

Where: Multifamily communities such as Sorrel Phillips Creek Ranch (352 apartment homes).

Mounting: Metal-stud or wood-stud party walls; check fire-rated shared walls.

Home theater rooms

Where: Two-story houses with dedicated media rooms.

Mounting: Plan blocking for the screen wall and sound isolation before drywall.

Tips before you mount

  • Frisco homes are mostly less than 25 years old, so framing is usually modern: lag into two 16"-on-center studs with 5/16" lags and request blocking during construction if you plan a media wall.
  • Large two-story great rooms often have 20-foot ceilings and stone fireplaces: check heat, anchor into the stone face or framing and use a pull-down mount for a high TV.
  • Frisco clay soil moves and slab cracks are common even in newer homes; avoid mounting over visible cracks.
  • Almost every neighborhood has an HOA with architectural covenants; review them before exterior TVs, conduit or speakers.
  • Built-in theater rooms: plan the screen wall, in-wall speakers and a dedicated circuit during framing so the wiring stays within code.
  • A regular TV cord cannot be buried in the wall (NEC 400.12); use an in-wall power kit and CL2/CL3 low-voltage cable.
  • Outdoor living spaces take heat above 100 F in summer; pick outdoor-rated TVs and shade.
