Common wall types

Craftsman bungalows and Victorian homes

Where: Hyde Park (developed in the 1890s), Travis Heights (Craftsman, Art Deco and Spanish Colonial Revival, 1920s-40s) and Clarksville.

Mounting: Older wood framing and plaster; locate studs, pre-drill and lag into studs.

High-rise concrete condos

Where: Downtown towers (more than 30 residential buildings).

Mounting: Concrete anchors, association approval and a COI; surface raceways often needed.

Small condo buildings and converted properties

Where: Hyde Park, Rosedale and North Loop.

Mounting: Wood or metal studs; confirm with the association.

Limestone and stone-veneer homes

Where: Hill Country edge and west Austin.

Mounting: Hammer drill and masonry anchors on real stone; veneer homes mount into studs.

New wood-frame townhomes and apartments

Where: East and south Austin growth areas.

Mounting: Metal or wood studs; snap toggles or blocking.

Tips before you mount

  • Hyde Park, Travis Heights and Clarksville houses are 1890s-1940s wood-frame: probe with a stud finder, pre-drill plaster slowly and lag into studs with 5/16" lag bolts.
  • Downtown high-rise condos: use 1/4" concrete screws or 3/8" sleeve anchors with a hammer drill, and expect to submit a certificate of insurance (COI) and get association approval.
  • Limestone walls and fireplaces around the Hill Country edge need a hammer drill; drill into the stone face rather than mortar joints.
  • Austin's shrinking and swelling clay moves slabs and cracks drywall; do not mount across fresh cracks.
  • Central Austin historic homes in local historic districts may need review for exterior changes; plan outdoor mounts and conduit before work starts.
  • Patios and rooftop decks see strong sun and summer heat: use an outdoor-rated TV, shade and stainless hardware.
  • A regular TV cord cannot be hidden in the wall (NEC 400.12); use an in-wall power kit and CL2/CL3 cable.
