What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall
Cedar Hill sits on hilly terrain southwest of Dallas near Joe Pool Lake and Cedar Hill State Park, with traditional brick homes from the 1980s and 1990s and a wave of new construction. The median year built is 1995, and most new communities have an HOA.

Common wall types
Brick-veneer houses of the 1980s-90s
Where: Established neighborhoods on the east side such as Stonewood Heights and Mountain Creek.
Mounting: Wood studs behind brick; mount to interior studs.
New-construction two-story houses
Where: Lake Ridge, High Pointe and Wildwood at Lake Ridge.
Mounting: Modern framing at 16 inches on center; ask the builder for blocking locations before closing drywall.
Larger-lot custom homes
Where: West side of the city, where lots are larger and more open.
Mounting: Wood frame with stone or brick; outdoor mounts are exposed to wind and sun.
Metal-stud apartments
Where: Apartment communities along US 67 and Interstate 20.
Mounting: Snap toggles or blocking.
Tips before you mount
- Cedar Hill's hills and clay soils move foundations; fresh cracks at drywall corners are common. Locate studs with a finder and avoid mounting on cracked sections.
- New builds in Lake Ridge and similar communities are the easiest to retrofit: studs are 16" on center, so lag the mount into two studs with 5/16" lags and run low-voltage cable pulled through an in-wall conduit.
- More than 95 percent of recent new-construction sales there came with an HOA, so check the covenants before adding an outdoor TV, speaker wiring or exterior conduit on a front elevation.
- On a stone or brick fireplace wall use 1/4" concrete screws or 3/8" sleeve anchors with a hammer drill, drilling into the face of the stone or brick.
- Hill-top and lake-view patios face strong wind and afternoon sun: use an outdoor-rated TV with stainless hardware and a secure locking mount.
- Cord concealment: NEC 400.12 does not allow a regular TV cord to run inside the wall; use a recessed power kit and CL2/CL3 cable for HDMI.
