Walls in West Palm Beach homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

West Palm Beach has some of South Florida's best-preserved 1920s neighborhoods, including El Cid, Flamingo Park and Northwood, built in Mediterranean Revival, Mission and frame vernacular styles. The median home was built in 1988, and 19.6% of homes predate 1960, so older plaster and wood-frame walls matter here more than in many Florida cities.

Common wall types

Mediterranean Revival and Mission houses

Where: El Cid Historic District, built mostly between 1923 and 1926, and Flamingo Park.

Mounting: Masonry or stucco construction with plaster interiors; use masonry anchors and slow pre-drilling, and keep fixes reversible in historic homes.

Craftsman bungalows and frame vernacular cottages

Where: Flamingo Park, Northwood and Grandview Heights.

Mounting: Wood-frame walls, sometimes plaster over lath; locate studs and use toggles only where framing is missing.

Downtown high-rise condos

Where: Along Flagler Drive and Clematis Street.

Mounting: Poured concrete walls and metal-stud partitions; hammer drill, anchors and association approval.

Concrete block ranch houses

Where: Post-war neighborhoods west of the waterway.

Mounting: Block exterior walls with furring; anchor into the block.

Newer townhomes and apartments

Where: Infill around CityPlace and Northwood.

Mounting: Metal studs and shared walls; snap toggles or blocking.

Tips before you mount

  • Historic districts: interior work is usually simple, but exterior changes and visible wiring may be reviewed; keep runs inside and avoid exterior penetrations.
  • Old plaster: pre-drill slowly without hammer mode and plan on patching; use toggle bolts where framing is not available.
  • Block and stucco: anchor into the block face with 1/4 inch concrete screws and avoid the thin furring strips and mortar joints.
  • Waterfront humidity: salt air and humidity corrode ordinary hardware near the Intracoastal; use stainless fasteners on outdoor TVs.
  • Condo towers: obtain written approval and supply a certificate of insurance, and plan surface raceways for concrete walls.
  • Hidden power: NEC 400.12 forbids hiding a standard power cord, so use a recessed in-wall rated kit and CL2 or CL3 cable for low-voltage runs.
