Common wall types

Wood-frame historic houses

Where: Springfield, Riverside, Avondale and Old Ortega, with Victorian, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and bungalow styles.

Mounting: Plaster or older finishes are possible; find studs first and pre-drill slowly.

Mid-century and suburban block or frame houses

Where: Neighborhoods across the Southside and Westside, plus newer suburbs.

Mounting: Check whether exterior walls are block or frame; use masonry anchors in block and lags into studs elsewhere.

Condos and townhomes

Where: San Marco and the riverfront, where condos and townhomes mix with houses.

Mounting: Metal studs and concrete are common; confirm association rules and the COI before any drilling.

Apartments in 5-plus-unit buildings

Where: About 25.8% of homes.

Mounting: Use snap toggles or blocking in metal studs and follow lease rules.

Tips before you mount

  • Lag the mount into at least two studs, usually 16" on center, with 5/16" lag bolts; an articulating arm leverages far more weight on the wall than a fixed mount.
  • Historic district houses: if the wall is plaster, a toggle bolt rated for the load is a fallback when no stud sits where the mount needs to go.
  • Block exterior walls in newer houses: use concrete screws or sleeve anchors in the block face, not the furring strips.
  • Humidity and coastal exposure: use stainless or coated hardware outdoors and plan for moisture around any porch or patio TV.
  • Hiding wires: NEC 400.12 does not permit a standard TV power cord inside a wall cavity, so in-wall power needs a code-rated recessed outlet kit, while HDMI and speaker runs use CL2 or CL3 rated cable.
  • Condos: get approval for exterior or concrete wall work, and expect the association to ask for a COI naming it.
