What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

St. Petersburg has some of Florida's best-known bungalow neighborhoods, including Historic Kenwood, with 125 blocks of 1920s Craftsman bungalows, and the Old Northeast, founded in 1911. The median home was built in 1970, and 36.3% of homes predate 1960, while downtown has added new condo and apartment towers.

Common wall types

Craftsman bungalows

Where: Historic Kenwood, built mostly 1912 to 1945, where bungalows make up more than half the homes.

Mounting: Wood frame, often plaster over lath; find studs and use gentle pre-drilling.

Mediterranean, Colonial and Prairie houses

Where: Historic Old Northeast, one of Florida's largest National Register districts.

Mounting: Mixed plaster and masonry; masonry anchors and slow drilling.

Waterfront houses

Where: Snell Isle and other waterfront areas.

Mounting: Block or frame with stucco; stainless hardware.

Downtown condo and apartment towers

Where: Downtown St. Petersburg and the waterfront.

Mounting: Poured concrete and metal-stud partitions; follow association rules.

Post-war block ranches

Where: Postwar neighborhoods outside the historic cores.

Mounting: Block with furring; anchor into block.

Tips before you mount

  • Bungalow walls: many Kenwood and Old Northeast homes have plaster over wood lath; use a stud finder, pre-drill slowly and use toggles where framing is missing.
  • Raised wood floors: bungalows are often on pier foundations, so check beneath the wall before running cable down through the floor.
  • Block ranch walls: anchor into solid block face shells, not furring or mortar joints.
  • Flood-zone and storm points: low-lying areas near Tampa Bay flood in storms, so keep media equipment above likely water levels.
  • Condo towers: obtain approval and a certificate of insurance before drilling concrete.
  • Hidden power: NEC 400.12 forbids concealing a standard cord, so use an in-wall rated kit and CL2 or CL3 cable.
