Walls in Miami homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

Miami is a city of high-rise towers and concrete-block houses: 52.1% of homes are in buildings with 20 or more units, and the median home was built in 1984. Brickell is the densest condo market, while Coral Gables and the Upper Eastside offer Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern housing.

Common wall types

High-rise poured concrete condos

Where: Brickell, Downtown, Edgewater and Biscayne corridor towers.

Mounting: Poured concrete walls with drywall on furring or metal studs. Use a hammer drill and concrete anchors; in-wall wiring is usually impossible, so plan surface raceways and building approval.

Concrete-block bungalows and ranches

Where: Little Havana, Shenandoah, Flagami and Allapattah.

Mounting: Block walls with furring and drywall; anchor into the block face rather than the furring strips.

Mediterranean Revival houses

Where: Coral Gables and Miami's historic neighborhoods.

Mounting: Stucco over block or masonry with plaster interiors in older examples; masonry anchors and slow drilling.

Miami Modern (MiMo) buildings

Where: Upper Eastside and Mid Beach corridors, built in the 1940s to 1960s.

Mounting: Block and poured concrete with terrazzo or plaster; use masonry anchors and avoid surface finishes you cannot patch.

Metal-stud interior partitions

Where: Newer mid-rise condos and rentals across the city.

Mounting: Use snap toggles or add blocking; confirm weight limits for your arm.

Tips before you mount

  • Condo towers: expect association approval and a certificate of insurance before drilling; some buildings restrict hours and require specific anchors in structural walls.
  • Concrete: use 1/4 inch concrete screws or 3/8 inch sleeve anchors in solid concrete; avoid drilling near post-tension cables in slab floors and ceilings, which can be dangerous if cut.
  • Block houses: place anchors in solid face shells, keep away from mortar joints and hollow cores, and expect to surface-run cables rather than fish them.
  • Salt air and humidity: balcony and lanai TVs need an outdoor-rated unit, stainless hardware and sealed connections; indoors, keep hardware off bare exterior block where condensation forms.
  • Hurricane prep: Miami is in the high-velocity hurricane zone, so secure outdoor TVs and take down patio mounts before storms rather than trusting a mount to survive winds.
  • Hidden power: a regular power cord cannot go inside the wall under NEC 400.12, so use a recessed in-wall rated kit and CL2 or CL3 cable for signals.
