Walls in Hollywood homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

Hollywood mixes 1950s to 1970s concrete-block neighborhoods such as Driftwood and Emerald Hills with historic streets near the beach and a strip of oceanfront condos. A large share of its housing predates 1960, so older plaster and block walls turn up more often than in newer Florida suburbs. About 27.6% of homes were built before 1960, and the median build year is 1970.

Common wall types

Concrete block with furring strips

Where: Driftwood (homes from the 1950s and 1960s) and Emerald Hills (late 1960s to mid-1970s), where listings describe concrete block exterior walls.

Mounting: Drywall sits over thin furring on block, so anchor into the block with 1/4" concrete screws or 3/8" sleeve anchors rather than the strips.

Plaster or older drywall in pre-1960 houses

Where: Older streets near Downtown Hollywood and Hollywood Lakes.

Mounting: Locate studs or masonry first and pre-drill slowly; plaster can crack around anchors, and a backer board spreads load on weak plaster.

Poured concrete condo walls

Where: Oceanfront and Intracoastal condo buildings along the beach and Hollywood Boulevard corridor.

Mounting: Hammer drill and concrete anchors are needed; most associations require approval and a COI, and in-wall wiring is usually impractical.

Wood- or metal-stud interior walls

Where: Interior partitions in townhomes and 1970s-era subdivisions.

Mounting: Studs are typically 16" on center; use 5/16" lag screws into studs or toggles in metal studs.

Tips before you mount

  • Driftwood and Emerald Hills ranch houses are concrete block: expect to hit block under the drywall, so bring masonry bits and set anchors in the solid face shell, not the mortar joint.
  • Older Hollywood houses may have plaster or thick skim-coated walls; test-drill a hidden spot and use a stud finder that reads depth before committing to the mount position.
  • Garage-converted or Florida rooms in 1960s homes often have thinner wall construction than the main house; confirm what is behind the surface before hanging a heavy full-motion arm.
  • Beachside condos near the Broadwalk often limit contractor work hours and require a COI listing the association as additional insured; request the building's contractor form first.
  • Patios and covered lanais within a few blocks of the ocean get salt spray year-round; use stainless-steel fasteners, an outdoor-rated TV and sealed cable entries.
  • Hurricane shutters and impact windows can change which wall is practical for a TV; avoid mounting a large screen on a wall that takes direct sun through glass.
  • Wiring: use an in-wall rated power kit with CL2/CL3 cable rather than any ordinary cord; on block walls expect to use a surface raceway or a stud-bay route from an attic or closet.
