Walls in Boca Raton homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

Boca Raton is known for Mediterranean-style architecture, from the Mizner Park district that opened in 1989 to gated golf communities and 1970s beachside condos. The median home was built in 1983, and 45.1% of homes are in buildings with five or more units, so condo rules shape many installs.

Common wall types

Beachside and Intracoastal condos

Where: Boca Teeca, E. Camino Real and A1A towers, with many buildings from the 1970s.

Mounting: Poured concrete or block walls with furring; hammer drill and concrete anchors, surface raceways, and association approval.

Mid-rise Mediterranean condos

Where: Mizner Court (1988) and similar downtown and Camino Real communities.

Mounting: Block and concrete shells with metal-stud interior partitions; toggles or blocking on partitions, masonry anchors on shell walls.

Gated golf-community houses

Where: Boca West, Woodfield and Royal Palm areas with CBS construction.

Mounting: Block exterior walls, wood or metal interior studs; anchor into block on exterior walls and lag into studs on partitions.

Mizner-era Mediterranean Revival buildings

Where: Downtown Boca around Mizner Park and Palmetto Park Road.

Mounting: Stucco over masonry with thicker walls; masonry anchors and surface wiring.

Townhomes and villas

Where: Newer communities west of I-95.

Mounting: Metal or wood studs with shared party walls; check which wall faces the neighbor and avoid deep drilling there.

Tips before you mount

  • Condo associations: many Boca buildings require written approval, a contractor certificate of insurance and specific work hours before drilling.
  • Older 1970s towers: expect thick poured concrete and possible post-tension slabs; avoid drilling into floors or ceilings and keep mounts to walls.
  • Block walls: use 1/4 inch concrete screws in solid face shells, and plan on surface raceways because fishing cable through block is rarely possible.
  • Salt air: lanai and balcony TVs near the Intracoastal and ocean corrode ordinary hardware, so use an outdoor-rated TV with stainless fasteners.
  • Hurricane season: bring in or cover outdoor TVs and mounts ahead of storms; impact windows do not protect exposed equipment on a patio.
  • Hidden power: use an in-wall rated power kit, because NEC 400.12 forbids concealing a regular TV cord, and run CL2 or CL3 cable for HDMI and speakers.
