Common wall types

Newer stucco-over-frame tract homes

Where: Growth suburbs such as Roseville, Elk Grove and Folsom, where the Sacramento region saw some of the state's biggest housing growth in 2025.

Mounting: Interior walls are drywall on studs at 16 inches on center; mount to studs and never to the stucco shell.

Older plaster Craftsman and Tudor homes

Where: Central Sacramento neighborhoods such as Curtis Park, Land Park and East Sacramento.

Mounting: Plaster over lath is brittle; locate studs, pilot-drill without hammer mode and use toggles only between studs.

Condos and apartments

Where: Midtown and downtown Sacramento and suburban apartment corridors.

Mounting: Metal-stud or concrete assemblies; snap toggles or blocking for metal studs, masonry anchors for concrete, plus HOA or landlord approval.

Manufactured homes

Where: Park communities across Sacramento County.

Mounting: Thin wall panels and wider framing; hit framing or add a blocking plate for heavier TVs.

Tips before you mount

  • Valley summers: patios and garages in Roseville, Elk Grove and Folsom get hot enough to exceed an indoor TV's operating range; use an outdoor-rated set in full shade.
  • Newer tract homes: if the drywall is still open or a remodel is planned, add 2x blocking at TV height before closing the wall so a full-motion arm has solid backing; otherwise lag 5/16" bolts into two studs.
  • Plaster in older central-city homes: find studs first and avoid hammer mode; 1/4" toggles hold only light loads and should not carry an articulating arm.
  • Seismic: the region has lower earthquake exposure than the Bay Area, but anchoring into studs and strapping consoles is still inexpensive insurance.
  • HOA communities in the growth suburbs often restrict exterior changes; confirm that an outdoor TV or cable penetration is allowed before drilling through stucco.
  • Attic access in single-story homes makes top-down in-wall cable runs practical; keep fire blocking intact and use CL2/CL3 cable.
  • In-wall runs: use an in-wall rated recessed power kit instead of routing a regular TV cord through the wall (NEC 400.12), with CL2/CL3 rated cable for HDMI and speakers.
