Choosing where a soundbar in a media wall lives is harder than choosing the soundbar itself: the flush, "built-in" look everyone wants on Instagram is exactly the placement that muffles most modern bars. Dolby Atmos models bounce sound off the ceiling, so a tidy niche with a shelf 2 inches overhead quietly turns a premium bar into a mono speaker in a box.
What actually matters
Driver layout: which way does your bar fire?
Everything downstream depends on this one spec. There are three families:
- Front-firing only. Bars like the Sonos Ray have all drivers pointed at the room. These are the only ones that tolerate a true flush recess, and even then they change character. An AVForums expert told a poster planning a flush Ray install that "it'll sound different" in the recess and to test before committing, since the enclosure tends to add bass.
- Virtual Atmos, front and side firing. The Sonos Beam (Gen 2) does Atmos in software with no up-firing tweeters. It still needs open air to its sides. A Sonos Community member quoted roughly 4 inches of side clearance for the Beam's side-firing drivers.
- Physical Atmos with up-firing drivers. Sonos Arc and Arc Ultra, Samsung's HW-Q990D, LG's SL8YG and similar bars aim two or more drivers at the ceiling. Put a shelf or niche top directly above them and the height channel reflects off MDF instead of your ceiling. Most of these bars also fire sideways, which a niche blocks too.
Rule of thumb: If the spec sheet lists an "x.x.2" or "x.x.4" channel layout, the last digit is the number of up-firing drivers, and that bar should never sit under a closed lid.
Clearance above and beside the bar
For the Arc, Sonos staff on the official community state at least 4 inches between the top of the bar and the bottom of the TV when the two are in the same plane, and at least 5.5 inches in front of and beside the bar. Community members who have lived with the Arc in tight spots go further and talk about roughly 10 inches of open air above the up-firing drivers. A UK media wall builder's own guide recommends 8 to 12 inches of clear vertical space above any bar with upward drivers.
Dolby's setup guide describes up-firing speakers as designed "to bounce sound off the ceiling to the sweet spot," and the usual guidance is a flat, reflective ceiling between roughly 7.5 and 12 feet.
Rule of thumb: Treat the manufacturer's clearance as a floor, not a target. If the design cannot give an Atmos bar at least 4 inches of open air above the drivers and 5.5 inches to each side, redesign the niche or change the bar.
Niche sizing: width, height, depth
Real soundbars are bigger than the pencil line most people draw:

A Sonos Community poster measured a standard 2x4 stud bay at about 4 1/8 inches deep and was told that would not clear an Arc once the HDMI and power plugs stick out the back. A UK builder's sizing guide gives a workable formula for front-firing bars: niche width equals bar width plus about 2 inches per side, depth equals bar depth plus roughly 1.2 inches for cables, and height equals bar height plus 2 to 4 inches. It also warns that once the niche is more than about 3 inches deeper than the bar, the side walls act like blinders and you lose stereo width.
Rule of thumb: Size the opening for the next bar, not this one. A 48-inch-wide, 5-inch-tall, 6-inch-deep opening fits every mainstream bar in the table above; a 46-by-4-inch slot fits exactly one and dates your wall the day you upgrade.
Mount type: fixed, extendable, or tilted
The honest answer to "recess it or not" is: recess the pocket, not the bar. Several AVForums members with Atmos bars report using an extendable bracket so the bar sits back when the TV is off and pulls forward when watching. The Sanus WSSATM1 mount made for the Arc and Arc Ultra offers 5 inches of depth adjustment, which Sanus explicitly describes as being there "to ensure mics and Atmos drivers are clear," and up to 15 inches of height adjustment under the TV. It listed at $169.99 and is now marked discontinued, so check availability or look at Sanus's universal extendable mounts.
Angling is mostly done wrong. One AVForums poster proposed tilting the bar down so the up-firing drivers clear the TV, and was told that misaims the three front channels. A slight upward wedge preserves the front stage while opening the Atmos path; the reverse, a slight downward tilt, is the Sonos Community trick for bars mounted high over a fireplace.
Rule of thumb: Fixed brackets are for front-firing bars. Anything with up-firing drivers gets an extendable mount or a ledge that puts the drivers forward of the TV face.
Cable and power access
An AVForums member building two media walls was blunt about the part nobody photographs: HDMI cables "can/do fail, so you have to factor in how you'll replace them." Plan a removable back panel or a pocket you can reach behind, and run the HDMI in conduit back to the TV recess so a dead eARC cable is a 10-minute swap rather than a drywall job. Important: In the US, the National Electrical Code's section 400.12 does not permit flexible cords, including extension cords and appliance power cords, to be concealed inside walls, floors or ceilings. A soundbar pocket needs its own receptacle wired to the circuit, or a listed in-wall power kit designed for the purpose. Both jobs belong to a licensed electrician; running the bar's stock power cord through the framing is a code violation and a fire risk.
Estimated cost: Recessed TV and media boxes with a surge-protected outlet and low-voltage inserts, such as the Legrand Pass & Seymour kits sold at Home Depot, run about $50 to $53 for the hardware before the electrician's labor.
Heat, vibration and neighbors
Soundbars run warm, which AVForums posters cite as a second reason not to seal one inside MDF. A recess also couples the cabinet to the wall: one expert warned a homeowner recessing a bar into an old chimney void that "noise travels" and suggested damping on the rear and sides, especially against a shared party wall.
Rule of thumb: Leave an air gap on all sides, add a strip of damping felt where the bar shelf meets the wall, and if the bar supports room tuning (Sonos Trueplay, Samsung SpaceFit), run it after the wall is finished, not before.

The last row is the escape hatch the forums keep landing on: if the flush look matters most, a genuinely invisible result comes from in-wall speakers and in-ceiling height channels, not a buried soundbar. That is a home theater installation job, so price it as one.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing the bar after the framing is done. Half the forum threads start with a finished 4-inch-deep slot and a bar that will not fit. Pick the bar, or at least its category, first. The media wall layout planner lets you mock up the TV, fire and bar zones with real dimensions.
- Assuming "Atmos" means one thing. The Beam (Gen 2) is Atmos-badged with no up-firing drivers; the Arc has them. Same brand, opposite niche requirements.
- Trusting the showroom demo. Bars are demoed on open tables with a clear ceiling. A poster on a UK forum described a flush-recessed Arc that looked "incredible" and sounded like a cheap supermarket bar.
- Skipping the pull-out test. Before the panels are glued, set the bar on a temporary shelf at the planned position and play an Atmos demo clip. Then slide it 5 inches forward and listen again. If the difference is obvious, buy the extendable bracket now.
- Forgetting the TV overhang. A wall-mounted TV that sits 3 to 3.5 inches off the wall becomes a lid over the bar. Sonos Community users fix this with spacers behind the bracket so the bar's drivers sit forward of the screen edge.
How to decide
Answer three questions in order.
- Does the bar have up-firing drivers? If no, a flush recess is on the table. Size it with 2 inches of side room, allow for plugs behind, and test-fit before finishing.
- If yes, can the design give those drivers open air? Either surface-mount on the wall face with the manufacturer's clearances, build a ledge so the drivers sit ahead of the TV, or pocket it on an extendable bracket. A closed niche is off the table for this bar.
- Is the power and HDMI path serviceable and legal? A dedicated receptacle or listed in-wall kit installed by an electrician, low-voltage in conduit, and a way to reach the connectors without tools.
Best for: Homeowners who want the flush look and are willing to live with a front-firing or virtual-Atmos bar: recess it. Homeowners who bought a real Atmos bar for its height effects: pocket plus extendable bracket, or surface-mount and accept the bar as a visible element.
