How deep should a media wall be? It's one of the most second-guessed numbers in the entire build — partly because the media wall trend crossed over from the UK, where every spec is quoted in millimeters, and partly because glossy fireplace photos never reveal whether that flush finish took a 4-inch cavity or a 2-foot one. The result is a pile of confidently repeated depth "rules" that don't survive contact with actual manufacturer spec sheets. Let's bust the seven we hear most often.
"A media wall needs to be at least two feet deep"
"If you want a fireplace in there, plan on 20 to 24 inches of depth — anything less won't work."
You'll find versions of this claim in design guides, and it scares a lot of people out of the project. The reality: two feet is a style choice, not a requirement. The rough opening for a standard recessed electric fireplace like the Touchstone Sideline 50 is just 5.75 inches deep, and UK fireplace retailers — who build more media walls than anyone — put most media wall fires at a 150–300 mm (roughly 6–12 inch) recess. Builders on AVForums, where the longest-running media wall threads live, consistently frame their false walls at 200–250 mm (8–10 inches) total, using 4-inch studs.
Deeper walls exist because people want them to hold open shelving, in-wall speakers, or chunky framed proportions — not because the TV or the fire demands it.

Rule of thumb: A finished depth of 8–10 inches handles a recessed fire plus a surface-mounted TV for the vast majority of builds. Only go past 12 inches if you're adding shelving or storage — and only past 16 if you know exactly what's going in there.
"You can't recess a fireplace into a regular 2x4 wall"
"Electric fireplaces need a 2x6 wall minimum. If your house is framed with 2x4s, forget it."
Half true — and manufacturers have been closing the gap. Touchstone's Sideline Fury series was designed specifically for this problem: its firebox is 4.25 inches deep, and the company markets it explicitly as sized for 2x4 stud walls. If you're recessing into an existing interior wall, a slim-series fire may drop straight in between the studs you already have.
The standard models are a different story. A regular Sideline 50 wants a rough opening 5.75 inches deep, and the larger Sideline Elite Pro 72 needs 6 3/8 inches — both are 2x6-wall appliances. In a 2x4 house, that means either furring out the wall or building a false stud wall in front of the existing one, which is how most purpose-built media walls are framed anyway. Pro tip: Never frame first and shop second. Even within one brand, rough-opening depths range from 4.25 to over 6 inches depending on the series. UK build guides are blunt about it: buy the fire before you build the wall, because the framework has to match the exact appliance.
"The deeper the cavity, the safer the fireplace"
"Leave loads of extra space behind the fire so the heat has somewhere to go."
This one sounds sensible and is quietly wrong. Recessed media wall fires are front-venting appliances — heat blows out the front grille into the room, not into the cavity. That's the entire reason a TV can sit flush above one. Safety comes from following the manual: the exact rough opening the manufacturer specifies, the clearances around the unit, and the gap to the screen above. Touchstone's own guidance calls for at least 8 inches between the top of the fireplace and the TV on its front-vent recessed models. Important: What does matter is power. A typical recessed fire draws 1,500 W — around 12 amps at 120 V, most of a standard household circuit by itself. The manual will require an outlet inside the cavity, and that new outlet and circuit are a job for a licensed electrician, not a judgment call mid-build.
"A recessed TV niche only needs to be as deep as the TV is thick"
"My TV is 3 inches thick, so a 4-inch niche is plenty."
Measure once, regret annually. A niche that hugs the TV looks great in a render and fights you in real life: you need room for the mount behind the screen, finger room to hook the TV onto its bracket, and airflow so the panel isn't cooking in a sealed pocket. In a long AVForums thread on in-wall TVs, an owner recessing an 85-inch set (about 2.75 inches thick) built a 20 cm (8-inch) cavity behind it, and experienced installers recommended roughly 50 mm (2 inches) of clearance on all sides with a fixed bracket — you can only cheat down to about 10 mm if you're using a pull-out bracket that lets the set come forward off the wall.

Rule of thumb: Niche depth = TV thickness + mount depth + about 2 inches of breathing room. Niche width and height = screen size + about 2 inches per side, or build to the next screen size up if you ever plan to upgrade.
"Whatever the depth, just drop the power cord down inside the wall"
"The wall's hollow anyway — feed the TV's power cord down the cavity to the outlet."
This is the one myth on this list that's genuinely dangerous, and electricians' forums are full of people learning it after the drywall is up. The US electrical code (NEC 400.12) prohibits running flexible power cords concealed inside walls — cord insulation isn't rated for in-wall use, a cord can't shed heat inside a closed cavity, and a damaged cord behind drywall is a fire you can't see.
Important: The code-compliant fix is cheap and easy to plan at the framing stage: either an outlet installed directly behind the TV, or a UL-listed in-wall power relocation kit (PowerBridge-style) that uses proper in-wall cable between two plates. HDMI and low-voltage cables can run in the cavity; the power cord cannot. "A deep media wall will shrink the room"
"We'd love a media wall, but our living room is small — we can't give up a foot of floor."
Run the numbers before you rule it out. A 10-inch media wall usually replaces furniture: the TV console it removes typically sticks further into the room than the wall does, and everything that lived on it moves inside the build. Alcove layouts are even kinder — AVForums is full of builds where a false wall spans an existing chimney breast, so the recess swallows most of the depth and the room barely loses anything. Every installer has a story about this one. "Should fit" is how you end up with a firebox proud of the drywall by half an inch, or a rough opening cut for a fire that got discontinued mid-build. The depth of a media wall is an output of the design, not an input: the exact fireplace model sets the rough opening, the TV and bracket set the niche, the gear you're hiding sets the shelf depth, and framing follows. Changing a dimension costs nothing in the planning phase and a weekend of demolition after boarding.
