Half the appeal of a media wall is the clean face: no dangling power cord, no HDMI spaghetti pooling under the TV. But if you hide wires in a media wall the wrong way, you build the mess into the structure itself — and every future fix means cutting into a finished wall. Here are the cable problems homeowners actually report on the forums, what causes each one, and how installers solve them properly.
The TV power cord disappears into the wall — and that's the problem
Walk into plenty of DIY builds and you'll find the TV's factory power cord (or worse, an extension cord) fished down through the stud cavity to an outlet below. It looks clean. It's also a code violation.
The National Electrical Code (400.12, formerly 400.8) prohibits running flexible cords — extension cords, power strips, appliance cords — through holes in walls, ceilings, or floors. Those cords aren't rated for concealed spaces: trapped heat degrades the jacket over time, and a damaged cord inside a wall cavity is a fire you can't see starting. PowerBridge, one of the kit manufacturers in this space, also warns that insurers may deny a fire claim traced to a cord misused this way.
Important: Never fish an extension cord or the TV's own power cord through the wall cavity. Only wiring rated for in-wall use — NM (Romex) cable or a UL-listed in-wall power kit — may be concealed, and any new outlet work belongs to a licensed electrician.
The fix is simple and looks even cleaner: a recessed outlet installed directly behind the TV, or a UL-listed power relocation kit — a pair of recessed plates connected inside the wall with proper in-wall-rated building wire. The TV's cord plugs in behind the screen and nothing shows. This is standard scope for any in-wall cable concealment service, and it's the single most common correction pros make to DIY media walls.

The 4K picture flickers or drops out after the wall was closed
You mounted the TV, sealed the wall, and now the picture blinks black for a second, or the receiver won't hold a 4K HDR handshake. On AVForums, the warning comes up in thread after thread: HDMI is unforgiving of breaks and discontinuities in the run, and cheap cable that was yanked around a sharp stud edge during fishing is a prime suspect.
Three causes show up repeatedly: cable that was never rated for in-wall use, couplers or wall-plate joints added mid-run, and marginal cable that can't sustain high bandwidth over a longer pull.
The fix: pull one continuous, certified cable with no joints from source to screen. For any concealed run in the US, use cable with a CL2 or CL3 jacket rating — these are defined in NEC Article 725 for in-wall low-voltage use (CL2 is rated for up to 150 volts, CL3 for up to 300). Where the cable exits the wall, use brush plates rather than tight grommets so the plug end passes through without stress.

You bought a soundbar — and there's no path to get a cable to it
This is the classic year-two regret. The build was planned around exactly the devices owned on day one, cables were stapled or trapped between framing and board, and now there is no way to add a single new wire without surgery.
The cause is building without conduit. The solution — cheap at build time, expensive after — is to treat every cable route as a tunnel, not a one-time pull. In a long AVForums media wall thread, the consensus build looks like this: flexible corrugated conduit (20–25 mm, roughly 3/4"–1") running from the gear location to each device position, all runs terminating in one adaptable junction box you can actually reach, with a draw string left inside every tube. US custom installers scale the same idea up: 2" smurf tube or PVC between low-voltage boxes, with a pull line left in place.
Rule of thumb: Size conduit for the cables you'll pull plus their connectors, then go one size bigger. An HDMI plug is far fatter than the cable, and forum threads are full of people whose "big enough" conduit wouldn't pass a molded plug.
If the wall is already closed, an installer can often fish a new run if a clear stud bay lines up between openings — that's a normal call-out for a TV wall mounting or concealment pro, and far cheaper than rebuilding a section of the wall.
The gear cupboard runs hot and boxes keep crashing
Hiding the equipment is half the point of a media wall — until the streaming box locks up, the console throttles, and the AV receiver shuts itself down mid-movie. Sealed cupboards are the cause: receivers, consoles, cable boxes, and routers all dump heat continuously, and a closed MDF compartment traps it. On the What Hi-Fi forums the standing advice is to allow at least 2–3 inches of open space above and beside each component and never to stack heat-producing boxes on top of each other — stacked set-top boxes have a long record of heat-related failures.
The fix, in order of effort: add ventilation openings top and bottom of the compartment so cool air enters low and warm air leaves high; stop stacking components; and for a fully closed cupboard, fit a quiet exhaust fan positioned to push warm air out, not stir it around.

The remote stops working once everything is hidden
Tuck the boxes into a closed cupboard and the first thing you lose is the remote — infrared needs line of sight. The fix costs little if you plan it: HDMI-CEC lets the TV remote control most modern sources over the HDMI cable itself; many streaming devices and game consoles use RF or Bluetooth remotes that work through a door; and for stubborn IR-only gear, an IR repeater kit relays the signal from a small receiver eye near the TV to emitters inside the cupboard. The one thing that makes all of these easy is the same conduit path between the TV recess and the gear compartment you built for the cables.
Power and HDMI crammed through the same hole
When one hole in the plate carries the power feed and all the low-voltage cables, you've got two problems: it's against the separation logic of the code (line-voltage wiring belongs in its own boxes and cable runs, not sharing openings with signal cables), and it makes every future cable pull a game of operation around live wiring. The standard practice you'll see in every professional install guide is a low-voltage bracket with a brush plate for HDMI, Ethernet, and speaker wire — and a completely separate, properly boxed outlet for power.
How to avoid all of this
Every problem above is cheap to prevent while the studs are open and painful to fix after. A quick diagnosis chart, then the prevention list:

Before the boards go on:
- List every device you own and the two you might add, then count the cables — and pull spares.
- Run oversized conduit from the gear compartment to every device location, with a draw string in each tube.
- Terminate runs in an accessible junction point, not buried mid-wall.
- Put a properly installed recessed outlet behind the TV and inside the gear compartment — electrician's work, priced into the build.
- Ventilate any compartment that will hold powered equipment.

When NOT to DIY: Anything line-voltage — new outlets, relocated circuits, hardwiring an electric fire. That's a licensed electrician, both for safety and because unpermitted electrical work can surface at inspection or in an insurance claim.
