Common wall types

Shirtwaist houses

Where: Roanoke, Hyde Park and Brookside; a solid limestone or brick first floor with wood or stucco above.

Mounting: Mixed masonry and framed walls; check which story you are on before choosing anchors.

Victorian and Craftsman houses

Where: Hyde Park, restored Victorians and Craftsman homes.

Mounting: Plaster over framing; locate studs.

Streetcar-suburb houses

Where: Brookside (1919), Crestwood (1922) and the Plaza area (1923).

Mounting: Wood-frame with plaster or drywall.

Loft and condo walls

Where: Crossroads and Westport.

Mounting: Brick, concrete and metal-stud walls.

Tips before you mount

  • Lag the mount into at least two studs, usually 16" on center, with 5/16" lag bolts; an articulating arm leverages far more weight on the wall than a fixed mount.
  • Stone or brick first floors: use a hammer drill with concrete screws or sleeve anchors.
  • Plaster: find studs and pre-drill; use toggles when needed.
  • Kansas City swings between hot summers and freezing winters; outdoor TVs need outdoor-rated equipment.
  • Hiding wires: NEC 400.12 does not permit a standard TV power cord inside a wall cavity, so in-wall power needs a code-rated recessed outlet kit, while HDMI and speaker runs use CL2 or CL3 rated cable.
  • Condos and lofts: ask for the association's drilling rules.
