Walls in Denver homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall
What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall
Denver has one of the country's largest inventories of historic brick homes, from Denver Squares and bungalows in Capitol Hill, Washington Park and Congress Park to newer infill and downtown high-rises. Its median home was built in 1979, and 31.7% of homes predate 1960, so plaster, brick and masonry walls are common alongside modern drywall.

Common wall types
Brick Denver Squares
Where: Capitol Hill, Cheesman Park, Baker, Highland and City Park West.
Mounting: Solid brick exterior walls with plaster or drywall furring inside. Anchor into masonry or into studs behind the plaster; avoid hitting mortar joints, and expect surface-run wiring on exterior walls.
Brick and Craftsman bungalows
Where: Congress Park, Platt Park, Berkeley and Washington Park, built mostly 1900 to 1950.
Mounting: Interior partitions are often plaster over lath. Find studs, pre-drill slowly without hammer mode, and use toggle bolts where framing does not line up.
Finished basements with poured concrete walls
Where: Bungalows and ranch homes throughout the city, often turned into media rooms.
Mounting: Most are furred out. Lag into the furring studs when they are wood; for bare concrete use 1/4 inch concrete screws or sleeve anchors and avoid cracks.
Concrete and metal-stud condos
Where: Downtown, LoDo, Cherry Creek and Capitol Hill mid- and high-rises.
Mounting: Concrete needs a hammer drill and anchors; metal-stud partitions need snap toggles or blocking. Associations typically require approval before drilling.
Wood-frame infill and townhomes
Where: Newer construction in Highland, RiNo, Sloan's Lake and Stapleton/Central Park.
Mounting: Standard 16 inch stud spacing; look for blocking marked by the builder for TVs and lag into at least two studs.
Tips before you mount
- Old brick: drill into the solid face of the brick, not the mortar joint, using a hammer drill and 1/4 inch concrete screws or 3/8 inch sleeve anchors; soft historic brick can crumble, so test in an inconspicuous spot first.
- Plaster in older neighborhoods: pre-1950 plaster is hard and brittle. Pilot-drill slowly, keep a stud finder handy, and favor tilt or fixed mounts over long arms on lath-and-plaster.
- Basement media rooms: expansive clay soils can shift foundation walls seasonally, so avoid mounting across a visible drywall crack and leave a small allowance for movement.
- Altitude and sun: outdoor TVs on Denver patios get intense UV and wide daily temperature swings. Choose a unit rated for the temperature range and use stainless hardware.
- Hail and wildfire smoke: cover outdoor TVs when hail is forecast and during smoke days, and keep vents clear.
- Condos: downtown buildings generally want a certificate of insurance and written approval before any drilling into concrete or running cable through common walls.
