If you want to mount a TV on a media wall that is still flat and level in ten years, you have three real options: screw the bracket into the MDF face itself, fix through into the timber studs and noggins behind it, or use heavy-duty toggle anchors where the framing does not line up with the bracket. Holding power: the frame wins, and it isn't close

MDF has no grain. It is compressed wood fiber and resin, so a screw thread is only gripping packed dust — there is nothing structural for it to bite. Timber framing is a different world. Studs are the vertical structural members; noggins (Americans usually say blocking) are horizontal pieces fixed between them. In another AVForums thread, a homeowner asked whether fixing a bracket to a noggin instead of a stud was safe, and an experienced builder replied that he does exactly that when hanging radiators — which, full of water, weigh considerably more than any TV.

Rule of thumb: If a screw only ever touches MDF or drywall, treat it as decoration. Every load-bearing fixing on a media wall should end in timber, plywood, or an anchor with a published rating.

Weight: know what you are actually hanging

It says nothing about whether your MDF will.

Flush vs cantilever: the bracket changes the math

This is the criterion most people miss. A flush (fixed or tilting) bracket holds the TV an inch or two off the wall, so nearly all of the load is shear — pulling straight down. A cantilever (full-motion) arm extended 20 inches, which is exactly what mounts like the Sanus OLF18 offer, turns the TV into a lever that tries to pry the top fixings straight out of the wall. Building the wall now? Decide the fixing before the boards go on

If your media wall is still at the framing stage, this comparison is easy, because the strongest option is also the cheapest. Tell your carpenter where the TV center will be and have them add doubled-up noggins — or better, a full sheet of 3/4-inch plywood — across the TV zone before any MDF or drywall goes on. In the AVForums noggin thread, a homeowner reported that asking the builder to add extra noggins at bracket height took a couple of minutes. That is the whole cost of doing it right.

While the wall is open, run your power and HDMI routes too; retrofitting them later is far messier than planning in-wall cable concealment up front. Two honest caveats. First, the anchor is only as good as the board it clamps — a rating in drywall or MDF assumes that sheet is itself well fixed to the frame. Second, keep it to a fixed or tilting bracket and spread the load across every hole in the wall plate; the prying force of a full-motion arm is exactly what hollow-wall fixings are worst at.

Important: Never blind-drill a media wall that contains an electric fireplace — its supply cable and any recessed outlets run inside that cavity. If you cannot confirm what is behind the board, stop, and if new wiring is needed it is a job for a licensed electrician.

When NOT to DIY: A recessed TV cavity, a fireplace directly below the screen, or an 85-inch panel on a full-motion arm are all cases where a pro TV wall mounting service is cheap insurance compared to a cracked OLED.

Winner: toggles take this one — the only criterion where the frame does not.

So which should you choose?

Best for: Studs, noggins, or a plywood backer — anyone whose wall is still being built, anyone using a full-motion bracket, and any TV-plus-bracket package heading past roughly 50 lb. This is the default answer, and it should take a specific reason to deviate from it.

Best for: Heavy-duty toggle anchors — a finished media wall where the framing misses the bracket holes, paired with a fixed or tilting bracket and a modern lightweight OLED. Done properly, with rated anchors in every hole, this holds for the life of the wall.

Best for: Screwing into MDF alone — a remote shelf or an LED strip. Nothing you would be upset to find on the floor. If a previous owner mounted your TV this way, checking those fixings this weekend is worth your time.
