What actually matters when you pick a build method

A media wall is a framed box that has to hold a heavy TV, possibly contain an electric fire, hide a bundle of cables, and look like it was always part of the room. Judge both skins against those jobs — in this order.

1. How well it holds a TV, soundbar, and shelves

This is where the two methods genuinely differ. MDF is dense all the way through, so a screw bites anywhere on the face — you can land a TV bracket, a soundbar, or floating shelves wherever you like, years after the build. Drywall is the opposite: its gypsum core crushes under point loads, so anything heavy must be screwed through it into the timber behind. 2. Fire safety around an electric fire

Most media walls include an electric fireplace insert, and this is where the materials trade places. 4. Cost — sheet price is not the real number
