Walls in Cincinnati homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall
What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall
Cincinnati is built on hills, and its oldest neighborhoods are dense with 19th-century brick. Over-the-Rhine alone holds more than 900 Italianate brick buildings from the 1860s-1880s, while Hyde Park and Mount Adams add older houses and townhouses on steep lots. Census figures put the median year built at 1952, with 57.0 percent of homes built before 1960.

Common wall types
Brick Italianate rowhouses and plaster interiors
Where: Over-the-Rhine, where over 900 Italianate brick buildings date from the 1860s-1880s.
Mounting: Solid brick and plaster: use 1/4 in concrete screws or sleeve anchors into the brick face, avoid mortar joints, and expect plaster over lath or direct to brick.
Hillside townhouses
Where: Mount Adams, where narrow townhouses climb the hill below Playhouse in the Park.
Mounting: Party walls are often brick or block; masonry anchors for brick, lags for stud-framed infill. Stairs and split levels make wire paths hard to plan.
Older frame and masonry houses
Where: Hyde Park and other east-side neighborhoods with antique homes.
Mounting: Plaster and lath; find studs by pilot hole and lag into them.
Loft and condo conversions
Where: Former commercial buildings downtown and in Over-the-Rhine.
Mounting: Exposed brick or concrete needs hammer-drilled anchors; building rules often require approval and a COI.
Basement and hillside foundation walls
Where: Houses across the hills.
Mounting: Block or poured walls take concrete screws or sleeve anchors; hillside lots can bring moisture.
Tips before you mount
- Over-the-Rhine brick is old and often soft: drill pilot holes in the brick face, not the mortar, and keep anchors well clear of window openings and corners.
- Condo and loft conversions in downtown and OTR commonly need a written alteration request and a COI from the installer; exposed brick walls may be protected by association rules.
- In Mount Adams and other hillside houses, stairs and tiered floors mean a TV wall may be several feet above grade on one side; verify what is behind a stud wall at a stair landing before cutting in.
- Cincinnati's Ohio River valley is humid in summer; use outdoor-rated displays under porches and decks.
- Basement theaters: check for dampness and efflorescence before building a wall in front of foundation masonry, and use a framed wall with an air gap.
- In plaster walls, use CL2 or CL3 low-voltage cable and an in-wall rated power kit if concealing; NEC 400.12 does not allow a regular cord inside the wall, and surface raceways are often cleaner on brick.
