Bungalows and older houses

Where: Dilworth (founded 1890), Myers Park and NoDa.

Mounting: Wood-frame with plaster or drywall; locate studs.

Newer wood-frame subdivision houses

Where: Suburban Charlotte neighborhoods built since 2000.

Mounting: Drywall over studs at 16" centers; brick veneer is on the outside only.

Tips before you mount

• Lag the mount into at least two studs, usually 16" on center, with 5/16" lag bolts; an articulating arm leverages far more weight on the wall than a fixed mount.
• Brick-veneer houses: mount to interior studs, not the brick.
• Dilworth and NoDa older walls: locate framing and pre-drill.
• Summers are hot and humid; use outdoor-rated TVs on porches.
• Hiding wires: NEC 400.12 does not permit a standard TV power cord inside a wall cavity, so in-wall power needs a code-rated recessed outlet kit, while HDMI and speaker runs use CL2 or CL3 rated cable.
• Condos: ask for approval and a COI before drilling.
