Walls in Detroit homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

Detroit's housing stock is among the oldest in the country: 78.3% of homes were built before 1960 and the median home dates to 1946. Large brick and stone houses in Indian Village, Boston-Edison and Palmer Woods sit among many smaller brick bungalows and frame homes.

Common wall types

Large brick and stone historic houses

Where: Indian Village (Georgian, Arts and Crafts and Tudor Revival), Boston-Edison (36 blocks, 900-plus homes, built 1905-1925) and Palmer Woods (Tudor Revival).

Mounting: Plaster interiors over masonry or framing; locate studs or solid masonry and pre-drill.

Brick bungalows and frame houses

Where: Residential neighborhoods across the city.

Mounting: Drywall or plaster over studs; lag into studs.

Basement block or poured concrete walls

Where: Most houses have basements.

Mounting: Masonry anchors in the concrete.

Apartment and condo buildings

Where: Downtown and Midtown.

Mounting: Concrete and metal stud walls.

Tips before you mount

  • Lag the mount into at least two studs, usually 16" on center, with 5/16" lag bolts; an articulating arm leverages far more weight on the wall than a fixed mount.
  • Plaster: pre-drill slowly, and use toggle bolts where studs are not available.
  • Basement walls: use concrete screws or sleeve anchors into the block or concrete, and check for dampness.
  • Detroit winters are cold: keep a TV away from an uninsulated exterior wall where cold or condensation can affect the picture.
  • Hiding wires: NEC 400.12 does not permit a standard TV power cord inside a wall cavity, so in-wall power needs a code-rated recessed outlet kit, while HDMI and speaker runs use CL2 or CL3 rated cable.
  • Historic districts: exterior work may need review; interior mounting is generally unaffected.
