Walls in Louisville homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall

Louisville/Jefferson County has many older homes: 37.3% were built before 1960, and the median home dates to 1970. Old Louisville's Victorian mansions and shotgun houses in Germantown, Butchertown and Smoketown give the city a strong masonry and plaster tradition.

Common wall types

Stone and brick Victorian houses

Where: Old Louisville, with more than a thousand 19th-century structures across about 45 blocks.

Mounting: Plaster over masonry or framing; find studs or solid brick and pre-drill.

Shotgun and camelback houses

Where: Germantown, Butchertown, Smoketown and Portland.

Mounting: Narrow wood-frame houses; locate studs before mounting.

Victorian wood-frame and brick houses

Where: The Original Highlands.

Mounting: Mixed wood and brick; check each wall.

Post-war ranch and suburban houses

Where: Neighborhoods across Jefferson County.

Mounting: Drywall over studs at 16" centers.

Tips before you mount

  • Lag the mount into at least two studs, usually 16" on center, with 5/16" lag bolts; an articulating arm leverages far more weight on the wall than a fixed mount.
  • Plaster on masonry: use a hammer drill and masonry anchors where studs are not available.
  • Shotgun houses: interior walls may be thin plaster over lath; test with a small pilot hole.
  • Louisville summers are hot and humid and winters freeze; use outdoor-rated TVs on porches.
  • Hiding wires: NEC 400.12 does not permit a standard TV power cord inside a wall cavity, so in-wall power needs a code-rated recessed outlet kit, while HDMI and speaker runs use CL2 or CL3 rated cable.
  • In historic districts, exterior changes may need review; keep work on interior walls where possible.
