Common wall types

Poured concrete and metal-stud condo walls

Where: Waikiki, where condo high-rises date back to the 1960s, and the newer Kakaako towers.

Mounting: Concrete anchors and a hammer drill in structural walls; drywall partitions often have metal studs that need snap toggles or blocking.

Wood-frame and single-wall houses

Where: Older single-family neighborhoods such as Manoa.

Mounting: Older houses can have thin single-wall construction; locate the posts and framing before mounting anything heavy.

Concrete masonry walls

Where: Parts of lower-rise buildings and house foundations.

Mounting: Use masonry anchors into solid block faces.

Lanai walls

Where: Condo and house lanais across the island.

Mounting: Salt air demands stainless hardware and outdoor-rated equipment.

Tips before you mount

• Lag the mount into at least two studs, usually 16" on center, with 5/16" lag bolts; an articulating arm leverages far more weight on the wall than a fixed mount.
• Condo living dominates: many Honolulu associations require written approval for drilling and a contractor COI before work starts; check house rules first.
• Concrete tower walls: use 1/4" concrete screws or 3/8" sleeve anchors with a hammer drill, and avoid post-tension cables in slabs by confirming layouts with building management.
• Salt air and humidity: use stainless fasteners and outdoor-rated TVs on any lanai.
• Termites are a concern in Hawaii; see that any wall repairs or added blocking use appropriate material and that holes are sealed.
• Hiding wires: NEC 400.12 does not permit a standard TV power cord inside a wall cavity, so in-wall power needs a code-rated recessed outlet kit, while HDMI and speaker runs use CL2 or CL3 rated cable.
