Walls in Scottsdale homes: what to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall
What to know before mounting a TV or building a media wall
Scottsdale mixes 1950s-1980s single-family homes with a dense Old Town core of condos, lofts and townhomes, and the Census shows 30.8% of homes are in buildings with 5 or more units (median year built 1991). That makes the wall type, and the HOA, the first thing to check before drilling.

Common wall types
Block and stucco mid-century homes
Where: Single-family homes in and around Old Town built mostly between 1950 and 1980.
Mounting: Many have block exteriors; anchor into the block face shell with concrete screws or sleeve anchors, and treat any furred or stuccoed exterior wall as masonry rather than stud wall.
Wood-frame stucco condos, lofts and townhomes
Where: Old Town condo and townhome communities such as 3rd Avenue Lofts and El Chaparral Villas, many built after 2000.
Mounting: Interior walls are typically drywall on studs; find studs for the mount, and ask the HOA about shared walls and what is behind them.
Concrete and metal-stud high-rise or mid-rise units
Where: Downtown Scottsdale condo buildings near Old Town.
Mounting: Concrete needs a hammer drill and masonry anchors; metal-stud demising walls need snap toggles or added blocking.
Custom desert-contemporary and Southwestern homes
Where: Hillside and North Scottsdale custom homes.
Mounting: Walls can combine block, framing and thick stucco returns; confirm the substrate with a stud finder and a test hole before committing to a layout.
Tips before you mount
- Old Town condos: most communities have HOAs, so ask whether drilling into a shared or demising wall needs written approval, and expect to provide the installer's certificate of insurance (COI) naming the association.
- Mid-century block homes from the 1950s-1970s: locate the block cores before drilling; 1/4" concrete screws into solid face shell hold most TVs up to about 65", and 3/8" sleeve or wedge anchors suit heavy articulating arms.
- Newer loft and townhome walls: Studs in wood-frame walls are typically 16" on center; 5/16" lag bolts about 2.5" to 3" long into two studs carry most TVs, and a full-motion arm should never hang on drywall anchors.
- Covered patios and ramadas in a Scottsdale summer can exceed the operating range of a standard TV; use an outdoor-rated set in shade, with stainless fasteners and sealed penetrations through stucco.
- Metal-stud party walls in mid-rise buildings: use snap toggles rated above the combined TV and mount weight, or have blocking added between studs before the wall is closed.
- Running power for a wall-mounted TV: an in-wall rated recessed outlet kit is required rather than a standard cord inside the wall (NEC 400.12), and HDMI or speaker runs in the wall should be CL2/CL3 rated.
- Block walls offer little room for hidden wiring, so a paintable surface raceway is often cleaner than chasing the wall.
