What this means for you

  • Control4 and Lutron are the default pair for whole-home automation and lighting. If you want a mid-to-high-end system that many local companies can service later, they're the safest bet.
  • Savant and Crestron are listed by fewer companies (78 and 68), so there are fewer local options to install and service them.
  • Sonos is the most widely supported audio platform, from TV-mounting specialists to full integrators.

Credentials: what to look for

CEDIA is the trade association for residential integrators. HTA certification adds a vetting step that covers business practices and project quality. Neither is required to mount a TV, but for a dedicated theater or whole-home automation project, a credential is a useful filter. Credentials are listed as stated by each company.

What installers actually offer

Most companies are integrators that do more than mount TVs. If you only need a TV on the wall, a TV-mounting specialist may be the simpler choice. If you're planning a theater, automation or outdoor AV, an integrator can handle everything in one project.

Wall types installers say they handle

Drywall and brick (162 companies each), concrete (108), stone (106), tile (72), fireplaces (61) and plaster (51) top the list. Metal studs, marble, stucco and glass are mentioned far less often. If your wall is unusual, confirm the installer has done it before.

Who runs these companies

Of the companies that state an ownership type, 95 say they are owner-operated, 63 family-owned and 20 veteran-owned. The median founding year among companies that list one is 2004, so many local installers have been in business for 20 years or more.
