Building a media wall over a radiator or HVAC vent adds anywhere from about $8 for a magnetic deflector to roughly $1,500 for a custom ventilated radiator enclosure or a plumber re-piping a radiator across the room, on top of a media wall that already runs $2,500 to $15,000+ in the US. The right fix depends on three things: what is under the wall (supply vent, return vent, or hot-water radiator), how hot it runs, and how badly you want the TV in that exact spot.

A common scenario: a basic media wall at $2,500 to $4,500, plus $250 to $500 for an HVAC contractor to extend a supply duct up the stud bay and drop a new register above the TV line. That is a 6 to 20 percent bump for a permanent fix.

One Houzz homeowner paid $130 for a vent move because the HVAC tech was already on site. That is the floor, not the norm.

Cost driver 1: how hot the thing under your TV actually gets

The reason this costs anything is the TV. Samsung's user manual lists an operating range of 50°F to 104°F (10°C to 40°C), asks for at least 4 inches of clearance around the set, and states flatly: "Do not place this apparatus near or over a radiator or heat register." Park a TV in a radiator's rising plume and you void the warranty before you damage the panel.

AVForums members have argued this for fifteen years. The consensus: a hot-water radiator running at 40 to 60°C (104 to 140°F) can push the air above it past a TV's rated ceiling. One member ran a 46-inch LCD above a 5-foot double radiator for over a year without trouble, but only after fitting a shelf about 10 inches below the screen so "the heat moves in front of the TV and not up into the vents." A Tom's Hardware moderator looked at a 10-to-12-inch gap and said plainly he would not put a TV in that environment.

Rule of thumb: A radiator needs a heat-diverting ledge between it and the TV, and the TV's bottom edge wants at least 4 inches of free air. A supply vent is less dangerous to the TV but more dangerous to the room if you bury it.

For your budget: a radiator means a diverting shelf plus ventilated cover (cheap) or moving the heat source (not cheap). A supply vent usually gets solved by redirecting airflow. Cost driver 2: supply vent vs return vent (this decides whether you can box it at all)

Forced-air homes have two kinds of grilles, and they are not interchangeable.

Supply registers push warm or cool air into the room. You can deflect them, extend them through a toe-kick, or move them up the wall. Cost: $8 to $500.

Return grilles pull air back to the furnace or air handler. HVAC contractors are blunt about covering one: too little air crosses the evaporator coil and it freezes, and in heating season the heat exchanger can overheat and crack, a carbon monoxide risk. There is no deflector for a return. Leave it fully open, build a louvered panel with at least as much free area as the original grille, or pay to relocate it.

Important: Never seal a return vent inside a closed media wall cavity. If the return sits where the TV panel has to go, that is a licensed HVAC job, not a carpentry decision. A floor supply vent under the base of the wall is the cheapest problem to have. A toe-kick duct kit ties the floor boot to a register in the plinth for about $79, and the air exits at ankle level just as it does under kitchen cabinets.

Cost driver 3: access you will need later, not now

Radiators need bleeding. Valves fail. Dampers get adjusted. Every one of those jobs gets far more expensive once it is behind MDF, which is why UK media wall builders tell you to design removable or magnetic panels from day one.

Boxing a radiator in also costs heat. A Liverpool John Moores University study measured up to a 40 percent drop in heat output from traditional timber casings. Well-ventilated designs lose 5 to 25 percent according to cover makers, provided you keep at least 20mm (about 3/4 inch) at each side and 30mm (about 1 1/4 inch) at the top so convection works. A slatted front and an open bottom rail are the cheapest airflow you will ever buy.

Pro tip: If the radiator stays inside the wall, fit reflective foil behind it before the enclosure goes on. Cover makers cite up to 50 percent less heat lost into the exterior wall.

Leave a removable kick panel under the radiator valves. When a valve weeps three winters later, the alternative is a demolition job.

Cost driver 4: where the pipes and ducts physically run

A radiator move is $250 to $500 when the pipes come up through a wood-framed floor with a basement or crawlspace below. It gets ugly on a concrete slab or an upper floor with finished ceilings. One AVForums member in a Glasgow new-build moved his radiator about 20 inches and swapped in a vertical model as a DIY job: cut plasterboard, notched studs for pipe length, push-fit connectors, two days and a patched wall. He got lucky that only one radiator needed isolating. Do the same on a slab and you are chasing pipe through concrete.

Ductwork follows the same logic. Extending a supply up an interior stud bay is a short, cheap run. Moving a vent to a different wall means opening ceiling or floor, and that is where $10 to $40 per linear foot adds up.

Budget vs mid-range vs high-end

Price range: Budget, $10 to $350 on top of the wall. Keep the radiator or vent where it is. Supply vent: magnetic deflector or toe-kick duct kit. Radiator: a diverting shelf built into the design 5 to 10 inches above it, a stock ventilated cover, and the TV mounted well above the plume. Accept some heat loss and a visible grille.

Price range: Mid-range, $350 to $1,500 on top of the wall. Supply vent: an HVAC contractor extends the duct up the stud bay and sets a new register beside the TV panel, at $250 to $500 per vent. Radiator: a plumber moves it 2 to 4 feet along the same wall, or a custom ventilated enclosure with removable panels becomes part of the millwork. This is where most media wall installation projects land.

Price range: High-end, $1,500 to $5,000+ on top of the wall. Relocate a return grille to another wall with new ductwork, or remove the radiator, cap and rebalance the system, and fit a new vertical radiator on an adjacent wall at $800 to $4,600 installed. Add a fireplace media wall and you are paying two trades before the carpenter arrives.

Best for: Same-wall radiator moves and same-stud-bay duct extensions. They solve the problem for most rooms without the demolition bill.

Where to save (and where not to)

When to DIY: Magnetic deflectors, toe-kick duct kits, reflective foil behind a radiator, a slatted cover, and the diverting shelf. None of these touch wiring, gas, refrigerant, or pressurized water.

When NOT to DIY: Moving, removing, or capping a hot-water or steam radiator. Cutting or extending ductwork. Anything involving a return grille. A bad joint behind a media wall is a hidden leak into MDF. US plumbers charge around $200 per hour for this work, and it is still cheaper than rebuilding the wall.

Important: TV power cannot be an extension cord fished through the wall. NEC 400.12(5) prohibits flexible cords concealed by walls, floors, or ceilings. Use a listed in-wall power relocation kit or have an electrician add a recessed receptacle behind the TV. The real savings are in the quote stage. Two installers looking at the same radiator give wildly different answers, because one suggests a shelf and the other a plumber. Compare local media wall installers and ask each the same question: "What do you do with this radiator, and who does that part?" Or get matched for free quotes and let installers propose the fix.

Cost FAQ

Is it cheaper to move the radiator or move the TV? Moving the TV is free. If the radiator sits under the only spot the TV can go, AVForums advice has not changed in a decade: moving the radiator ($250 to $500 on a simple run) is far cheaper than replacing a TV that spent three winters above it.

Can I just close the damper on the supply vent behind the media wall? On one supply register in a multi-vent room, closing the damper costs nothing but you lose that heating and cooling. Never do this with a return. A deflector or duct extension keeps the air in the room for $8 to $500.
